What’s your biggest sporting achievement?
Olympian 2008 (triathlon), World Champion 2007 (biathle)
What are your goals?
To qualify for London 2012
Tell us a bit about yourself
Before taking up triathlon seriously I completed a degree in mathematics (1st class honours) at Bath University. I use to teach sailing during the summer, this is something I really miss doing. I still have a boat but I rarely get to sail it.
Tell us about your career history to date
I have a handful of European Cup podium and World Cup top 10s. I was Irish national champion in 2007 and 2008 – was injured for the race in 2009 and there hasn’t been one since! My highest world ranking is 11th. I have suffered many injuries in the last 2 years and health problems but with the help of Care for Health I am now getting back to my best.

How did you hear about Care for Health?
Through friends. I was sponsored by Atum 22 – a custom made bike company that Dr Duffy was involved with back in 2008 and was very impressed with his skills back then. It took me a while to make it into the clinic but I am endlessly glad that I did!
How has CFH treatment/advice helped you?
It has transformed my life! And I am not exaggerating. I have had 3 sacral stress fractures and have struggled with sacral alignment problems most of my career. Seeing Dr Duffy has controlled this and although I think I will always have to have treatment I am mostly symptom-free now. Diet and training advice has been great, I now follow the paleo diet due to advice from Emma Stiles and Alex Haddow. I have more energy, sleep better and recover well.
What’s the biggest difference in performance you have seen following CFH treatment?
I am able to put together a more intense and longer duration of session without injury. This January on a training camp I ran 100km per week for 3 weeks running - in the past I would have been injured if I exceeded 80km.
What does your training routine involve?
I average 5 hours of training a day, 7 days a week, 48 weeks of the year - 80km running, 20-25km swimming and anything from 300-600km riding.
What do you like best about triathlon?
I like pushing myself to the limit. I also like the people I get to meet and the places I visit. Without triathlon I think my life would be much more boring.
What’s your proudest moment?
My first podium in a European cup. I had just recovered from my first real injury problem and it was a great relief to be back competing well.
Who or what is your inspiration?
Gabrie Selassie
How do you know when you’re due a visit to Care for Health?
When I hurt more than usual! (Seriously, if I have a problem that lasts more than a few days I know I need to come in).
What’s your top tip for someone trying to improve in your sport?
Train hard but sensibly. Don’t go hard all the time - the easy miles are usually the ones you skip and are perhaps more important than the hard sessions in the long run.
