Everyday more and more people are beginning to discover the benefits of chiropractic care coming to see our chiropractors at Care for Health for back pain, neck pain, headaches and sciatica. One thing many people don’t realize is that you’re never too young or too old to benefit from the treatment a skilled chiropractor can provide. Today’s chiropractors generally have the training and experience to work with patients from early childhood through to advanced age. However, some chiropractors also choose to focus on the unique needs of specific types of patients.
But why should i take my kid to see a chiropractor if he doesn’t have any problem and doesn’t complain?
The spine is the axis of our whole body, both in newborns and adults is the one that carries all the weight and that protects the spinal cord, where the nervous system begins. Just like when we go to the dentist, to check our teeth, it makes sense that a specialist does a review of the spine.
Children are not as “made of rubber” as they have been telling us for decades. The birth (whether or not it was a difficult labour), learning to sit, crawl, get up or take the first steps are determining situations in our life that can compromise the spine since they are contexts where there is a certain level of stress.
Over the years and through learning, we run, jump, ride a bike, fall, carry a heavy backpack, adopt a bad posture after sitting at school for hours, play a sport, live the stress of exams … Not to mention the situations that come from genetics: a slight scoliosis, a tendency to not step properly… All these scenarios represent the day to day of any child and are adding possible subluxations (misalignments of the vertebraes) that when we grow can lead to complications when we are adults and have pressure on the nervous system.
There is evidence that chiropractic care may help prevent or relieve many common cold and allergy symptoms, including sneezing, coughing and itching or watery eyes. This is not to say that a visit to the chiropractor will “cure” the common cold or that the underlying illness will be eliminated, even temporarily. However, the research suggests that chiropractic adjustments may help to strengthen a child’s immune system over time giving them the ability to better adapt to and fight off illnesses. The reason for this is that a chiropractic adjustment is focused on relieving irritation on the nerves caused by subluxations in the spine. The same nerves that relay pain information are also the same ones that tell the body how to properly function; this includes your immune system.
Chiropractic treatments are tailored to every child according to their specific circumstances, including their age, height and weight. Obviously, an adjustment given to a newborn is much more gentle than that of an adult. In fact, it is typically no more than just slight pressure applied with a finger tip. Early detection and correction may help prevent the development of these conditions and other complications while improving a young patient’s quality of life.
Studies have shown that children who visit the chiropractor on a regular basis are likely to grow up with better posture and have fewer illnesses than their classmates. If you’d like to find out more about children and chiropractic care, please call Care for Health Chiropractic today!
